But Boyer was very strict and wanted to be in charge for his whole life. This is called being an "authoritarian." This time when Boyer was in charge lasted until 1843. Then in 1849, a new leader named Faustin Soulouque decided he wanted to be an emperor, which started a different time in Haiti's history called the Second Empire. So even though the country was called a republic, it was really ruled by just one man, Boyer, for a long time.
