Big Movie Star Party on TV: Watch and See Winners!

February 24th, 2024

The Screen Actors Guild Awards are happening in Los Angeles. This is the 30th time they have had the awards. A lot of actors and famous people are coming and you can watch them arrive on a special red carpet. You can watch the awards live on a website called Netflix. It will start at 8 p.m. and there will be no breaks for ads. People who miss it can watch it on Netflix later for 28 days. Two famous movies this year are "Oppenheimer" and "Barbie." They both might win a special award called best ensemble. Also, the Oscars, another big awards event, is happening soon and sometimes the winners at the Screen Actors Guild Awards win at the Oscars, too. On TV, there are shows like "Succession" and "The Bear" that have been nominated for awards. Some actors are favorites to win, like Da’Vine Joy Randolph. But for other awards, it's hard to guess who will win. There will also be a special award for Barbra Streisand. And some famous actors from a movie called "A Devil Wears Prada" will be there to give awards to others. Last year, the actors' group called SAG-AFTRA had a big protest because they wanted better work conditions. They are now having the awards after a difficult time. They were upset because of some changes in their work because more people are watching movies on the internet.

Streaming media
Streaming media means you can watch videos or listen to music without downloading the whole thing first. It's like watching TV or listening to the radio because the media comes to you as a stream, and you don't keep it on your device. When you're watching a video or listening to music online, sometimes it can stop or slow down if your internet isn't fast enough. But there's a trick called buffering that helps make it better by loading some of the media before you watch or listen. Sometimes you can watch things live on the internet as they happen; this is called livestreaming. It's like watching live TV. For livestreaming, you need a camera or something to capture the audio or video, something to turn it into a digital form, and a way to send it out to people. Streaming is different from downloading because you don't wait to get the whole file. With streaming, you can start watching a video or listening to a song quickly. Streaming is not just for videos and songs. It can also include things like subtitles that show up live or live text that updates. Today, lots of people use streaming to watch movies or TV shows they want, whenever they want. People also stream music.

Union busting
Some people try to make it hard for workers' groups, called trade unions, to have power or get more members. They use different ways to do this. Some are allowed by law, and some are not. In each country, the rules for these groups can be very different. The rules talk about many things, like telling people about the group, asking others to join, and what happens when workers stop working to make a point. There is a big paper called the Universal Declaration of Human Rights that says people can join these worker groups. But, this rule is not strong in all places and not all bosses or companies follow it. There are many companies around the world that help bosses deal with these worker groups. They work in many places like TV, hotels, and hospitals. Some are only in the United States, but workers' groups try to get members from many places. In America, there is one big company that helps bosses. If the bosses don't win against the worker groups, they don't have to pay this company. Workers from different places, who speak different languages, are joining together. In rich countries, the rules about workers' groups are followed better than in poor countries. Both the groups and the bosses have to know the rules to be fair.

Grammy Awards
The Grammy Awards are a big event where special prizes are given to the best music artists. They are very important and lots of people think they are the biggest awards for music in the whole world. The prize looks like an old music player called a gramophone, and that's why the awards used to be named after it. Music people first started giving out Grammy Awards in 1959. They wanted to celebrate the best songs and singers from the year before. The first time, it happened on May 4th. Now, the Grammys are one of four big shows that happen every year. The others are for movies, TV, and theater. The idea for the Grammys came from a different project to celebrate famous people in music with stars on the sidewalk. Some important music people didn't get a star, so the Grammys were made to honor them, too. At first, no one knew what to call the awards. They thought about naming them after Thomas Edison, who invented a way to play music on a phonograph. But, after a contest, they picked the name 'Grammy'. Now, there are 94 different types of Grammy awards. The 66th time they gave out Grammys was on February 4, 2024.
