Interessi: Understanding the world has always been of great interest to me; the experience and knowledge society has accumulated is of immense value. Throughout six years’ experience, I have spent three years teaching English as Foreign Language (EFL) in China, teaching History within mainstream British schools, and working within various Special Education Needs (SEN) settings. Alongside experience as a classroom teacher, I have over a years’ experience tutoring English internationally. These experiences together have furnished me with the ability to teach each individual according to their needs and to the best of their ability, presenting information in an innovative and engaging fashion.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
From these experiences, I have developed a wide range of skills so that my teaching practice is highly adaptable. Teaching EFL in China for over three years presented its own challenges; it required respect, appreciation of alternate ways of life and the ability to adapt to different backgrounds and beliefs in order to develop relationships with your students. Clear communication was of paramount importance; speech and language would both need to be altered based on student ability and age. The opportunity to experience different teaching methods, adapting to unfamiliar syllabuses and tutoring International English Language Testing System (IELTS) students has provided a wealth of international experience. Since having taught in China, I have completed a Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults ( CELTA), been a residential summer school teacher, and continue to tutor EFL to a range of ages and abilities.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
My second subject is History, my degree subject. I have experience teaching History through Key Stage 3 (KS3) to A-Level in a range of schools according to the main British exam boards and their own unique specifications. As a result, I have an excellent understanding of the skills, understanding and knowledge each aspiring historian is required. I am able to skillfully challenge able students or use my extensive knowledge of the subject in order to assist those who find the subject more challenging. My understanding of how different individuals learn and apply skills has been deepened through my work in the SEN sector, have worked with a range of people and conditions such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) to Prader-Willi syndrome. Such work needs excellent interpersonal skills, meaning I provide a calm, understanding, yet commanding presence in a learning environment.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
My classroom practice is guided by a consistent and principled approach to the practice of teaching, learning and assessment. My teaching practice is based upon the fundamentals of reflection and awareness of progress; teaching, learning and assessment should encompass all these features. In turn, reflection and assessment can serve to develop a student’s own understanding of what they are learning, and how they are progressing. This means the learner does not become overwhelmed, maintains their interest, and confidence in the subject continues to grow. This reflects my teaching persona, and the way in which students are taught; my enthusiasm and professionalism always shape an excellent learning environment. I pride myself upon innovative tasks, ensuring that the learner’s attention is caught. Ensuring a range of varied tasks are used in the classroom has resulted in lessons described as ‘enjoyable to observe and for pupils to take part in’. My strategies promote engagement and lead to impressive lessons and progress made, as well as the opportunity to develop professional, yet at times, humorous relationships.
